Sue Culwell, volunteer since April 2021

Sue was born and raised in Vandalia, Missouri. She has two amazing kids and seven beautiful grandkids (Makenzie, Nick and Emma Barnes and Michael, Patrick, Izzy and Quintan Culwell). Missouri Cancer Associates Executive Director Debbie Barnes is her daughter. Debbie is engaged to Dr. Steve Dresner. Sue’s son Jeff and his wife, Sally, live south of Hallsville. Jeff commutes to Sue’s farm south of Vandalia daily to manage their row-crop operation.

Why did you decide to volunteer? I get to do what I love! I have always had a heart for service whether in my church or taking care of neighbors or loved ones. Missouri Cancer Associates has such a great reputation for service that it seemed like a perfect fit. The staff is outstanding, and there is not a day that goes by that a patient doesn’t tell me how grateful they are to be taken care of by such a loving group of people.

Fun fact: My sister is a retired FBI agent. She has all kinds of great stories.

Hobbies: I walk 3 to 4 miles daily and am an avid reader. I love the Columbia Public Library. I volunteer at MCA four days per week and the Central Missouri Food Pantry one day per week. I am also a member of the 55+ planning committee at my church, Memorial Baptist Church.

Favorite quote: God is good all the time!

Who inspires me? Billy Graham and his ministry have always been an inspiration along with my children and my friends at MCA and church.

Favorite song: Because He Lives

Favorite childhood memory: Our family gathering to go to the woods to find the perfect Christmas tree with the tractor and wagon.
