Fatigue is the most common side effect of cancer treatment. During treatment, you may feel tired for multiple reasons, including:
- Treatment medications
- Uncontrolled symptoms
- Sleep disturbances
- Anemia
- Nutritional deficiencies
Managing Fatigue:
One of the best ways to manage fatigue is to balance rest and exercise. The American Society of Clinical Oncology recommends regular aerobic and resistance exercises, tailored to your physical fitness level and overall health. Your provider can help you determine what’s appropriate for you.
Other ways to manage fatigue include:
- Conserve Energy: Save your energy for important activities.
- Prepared Meals: Have prepared meals or snacks on hand.
- Nutrient-Dense Foods: Eat foods that are high in protein and calories.
- Rest Periods: Take small rest periods throughout the day.
About two days after cancer treatment, you may experience a “down day.” This is when patients often feel the most tired and may experience side effects like nausea, bowel changes, and taste changes. Down days occur because your body is working hard to flush out cancer cells and build new healthy cells. To help recover more quickly between treatment cycles:
- Move Your Body: Engage in light physical activity.
- Drink Fluids: Stay hydrated.
- Eat Well: Maintain a balanced diet.
