Managing Neuropathy During Cancer Treatment

Some cancer treatments can cause nervous system changes, also known as neuropathy. These changes can be temporary, but some may be permanent. Neuropathy is the dysfunction of nerve cells that control sensations and movements in your arms, legs, hands, and feet. Symptoms can vary widely and depend on which nerves are affected.

Common Neuropathy Symptoms:

  • Tingling, burning, weakness, or numbness in your hands or feet
  • Pain when walking
  • Loss of balance or clumsiness
  • Tired or sore muscles
  • Cold sensitivity
  • Hearing loss

Managing neuropathy symptoms will depend on your cancer treatment plan and may include:

  • Prescribed nerve medications
  • Icing your hands during certain cancer treatments
  • Physical therapy
  • Acupuncture treatments

Your provider can give specific guidance on symptom management based on your cancer medication type. Other ways to help manage nervous system changes include:

  • Avoiding Alcohol: Alcohol can worsen neuropathy symptoms.
  • Maintaining Normal Blood Sugar: Keeping your blood sugar within a normal range can help prevent additional nerve damage.
  • Avoiding Extreme Temperatures: Protect your hands and feet from extreme heat or cold to avoid aggravating symptoms.

Safety Tips at Home:

Neuropathy can raise the risk of injury at home. Here are some tips to stay safe:

  • Use rubber mats in the shower to prevent slipping.
  • Exercise caution when handling sharp objects.
  • Wear rubber gloves when cleaning to protect your hands.
  • Take time to steady yourself before walking.
