Nutrition During Treatment

Many patients have questions about nutrition during cancer treatment, but specific dietary needs and recommendations will vary depending on your diagnosis and treatment. Overall, well-balanced meals are essential for optimizing your health. Here are some general guidelines to follow:

  • Try Plant-Based Meals: Incorporate plant-based meals a few days a week by swapping out meat for beans, peas, lentils, tofu, or tempeh.
  • Eat Colorful Fruits and Vegetables: Aim to eat at least 2 ½ cups of colorful fruits and vegetables daily.
  • Get Enough Protein and Calories: Ensure you’re consuming enough protein and calories to maintain your strength and energy levels.
  • Limit High-Fat Foods: Especially those from animal sources, and avoid salt-cured, smoked, or pickled foods.

Fluids are also important during treatment. Staying hydrated helps with issues like diarrhea and constipation and protects your kidneys. Fluids also help your body process the cancer treatment. The amount of fluid you need per day depends on your health and lifestyle, but most people need at least 8 to 10 glasses of fluid daily to stay hydrated. Here are some tips:

  • Flavored or Infused Water: Try flavored water or fruit-infused water for a refreshing change.
  • Low-Sugar Options: Opt for low-sugar juice, milk, or caffeine-free tea.
  • Avoid Sugary Drinks: These can contribute to dehydration.
  • Moderate Caffeine: It’s okay to have some coffee or other caffeinated beverages in moderation, up to 2 cups per day.
  • Hydrating Foods: Stay hydrated with foods that contain fluids like fruits and vegetables, soups, smoothies, gelatins, and popsicles.
