Understanding Female Sexual Changes During Cancer Treatment

At Missouri Cancer Associates, we understand cancer treatment can cause a variety of sexual side effects that vary greatly among women. Some notice significant changes, while others experience very few. Emotions about body image and apprehension about physical intimacy can affect libido. Additionally, some women may experience bladder or vaginal infections, vaginal dryness, pain, fatigue, and decreased libido or lack of interest in sex.

Managing Vaginal Dryness

Over-the-counter moisturizers or water-based lubricants can help alleviate vaginal dryness. It’s also important to consult your care team about prescription options. To reduce the risk of vaginal infections, consider these tips:

  • Wear cotton underwear and pantyhose with cotton linings.
  • Avoid tight-fitting pants or shorts.
  • Use a water-based vaginal lubricant during sex.
  • Drink plenty of water.

Preventing Pregnancy

It is very important to prevent pregnancy during cancer treatment. Your provider will recommend a waiting period after treatment to ensure your safety. Some cancer treatments can impact fertility, so it’s crucial to speak with your provider before starting treatment.

Early Menopause

Cancer treatment may also trigger early menopause, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Irritability and mood swings
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Irregular or absent menstrual periods

These symptoms can decrease desire and comfort during sexual intimacy. The likelihood of early menopause depends on your specific treatment and age.

Post-Treatment Improvements

Loss of interest in sex and most treatment side effects are likely to improve once cancer treatment is over. Each situation is unique, so it’s important to speak to your care team about measures they recommend for your comfort and safety.

At Missouri Cancer Associates, our priority is your health and comfort. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support and guidance as you navigate these side effects.
